Back caption: New York Zoological Park (Bronx Zoo) / He holds the record / Peter the Great (usually called "Pete") is the oldest Hippopotamus recorded in any zoo in the world. He was born on July 13, 1903, and weighs about two and a quarter tons. His disposition is sweet and gentle.
As of his 44rd birthday in 1947, Pete was believed to be the oldest hippo in captivity. He died at the age of 49 on February 1, 1953.
