Description	Letter of support sent to President Dammann following decision to admit African American student “Dear Mother Dammann, A notice has been brought to my attention which urges the Alumnae of Manhattanville to protest the admission of a negro girl to the college next year. The notice was sent anonymously. It appears that the Alumnae or rather the members who, by sending the notice, have fallen below the standards of the organization, - are ashamed of the appeal! I wish to congratulate you, dear Mother. I am proud that the college has not allowed racial prejudice nor false social values to stand in the way of its principle. If certain members of the Manhattanville Alumnae wished to object to the acceptance of negroes able to pass the entrance qualifications their objection should have been made long ago when Manhattanville, as a Catholic Action Forum pledged its assistance to the cause of Christian justice for the negro. The Religious of the Sacred Heart are not committing “an unjust social action;” they are taking a very progressive step towards a justice which is being neglected in many Catholic Colleges. I, for one, am ready to applaud them vigorously. With every good wish. I remain you loving child,”

Digitization Specifications	Archive masters were scanned at 600 ppi, 24 bit color using an Epson 10000XL scanner and saved as uncompressed TIFFs using Photoshop CS4 and Windows XP. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) was employed using Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro. Derivative access files were saved as medium quality JPEGs, 200 ppi, 1000 pixels on the long dimension. Thumbnails were generated automatically by CONTENTdm.
