Mayor Walker has your letter requesting his participation in a subscription movement to purchase of the Metropolitan Museum of Art,John Sloan's canvas "The Lafayette".
As you will doubtless appreciate, the Mayor daily receives innumerable appeals for contributions and subscriptions for various purposes and as it is quite impossible for him financially, to accede to them all, he has found it necessary, in a spirit of fairness and impartiality, to pursue a uniform policy of declination.
The Mayor trusts you will understand that his inability to meet the request in your letter proceeds from adherence to this established policy.
